York’s future

THE reason that York is such a popular tourist destination is that this iconic Roman city has been able to preserve its past so that it can be cherished by current generations.

Yet, despite the enchanting appeal of so many historic buildings and the vibrancy of the city’s hostelries and the success of York’s racecourse, this is also a community that is facing a challenging future.

York’s over-dependence on the public sector for jobs means that is not as well-placed as other cities to withstand the coalition’s spending cuts – despite the area’s picture postcard appeal.

New investment, and job opportunities, are needed to compliment the tourism sector. The challenge, as Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber highlight, is doing so in a manner that protects the city’s historic fabric, but that also provides the planning framework for a more prosperous future.

As such, a careful balance needs to be struck to ensure that the town’s wider economic interests are given sufficient weight at all times.
