Yorkshire backpacker remembered 10 years on

A service to remember murdered backpacker Caroline Stuttle, from York, will be held on the 10th anniversary of her death.

The 19-year-old student was robbed and pushed off a bridge at Bundaberg in Australia in April 2002.

People will have the opportunity to light a candle for her during the service at York Minster.

The gap-year student was killed during a bag snatch by drug addict Ian Previte who was found guilty of her murder in October 2004 and is serving a life sentence.

Previte, 32, was also given 10 years for robbery.

He had denied pushing Ms Stuttle to her death from a 30ft bridge in Bundaberg, Queensland.

The service at York Minster will begin at 5.15pm with prayers led by the Dean of York.

It will feature a reading by Ms Stuttle’s brother Richard.

Her mother Marjorie Mark said that while the service at York Minster marked a decade since her daughter’s death, it was hard to believe that so much time had passed since the tragedy.

She runs a charity in her daughter’s name. It aims to raise awareness of safe travel for young people.
