Yorkshire barristers are appointed QCs

TWO barristers based in Yorkshire are among 88 approved to become new Queen’s Counsel.

Taryn Lee, joint head of 37 Park Square Chambers in Leeds and a mother of two, specialises in family law while Nicholas Lumley’s main area of practice is crime and regulatory work.

Miss Lee was called to the Bar in 1992 and has particular experience in child abuse cases involving all aspects of abuse, including shaken baby syndrome.

A member of the Bar Council, she is currently chair of its newly created Social Mobility Committee with a mandate to look into and improve the opportunities for those from non-traditional backgrounds entering the profession.

It is a particularly apt appointment since she is from a working class background herself.

The daughter of a publican, she went to a comprehensive school in Cleethorpes and says she got hooked on the law watching Crown Court and the American legal drama Petrocelli.

She studied business law at what was then Huddersfield Polytechnic before going to the bar school in London. She then returned north, marrying her husband a wholesale fish merchant.

She chaired the 2011 Annual Bar Conference and spoke out against recent legal aid cuts which she predicts will cause delay and DIY litigants in the family courts.

Mr Lumley, 42, a member of Park Court Chambers in Leeds, was also called to the Bar in 1992.

He regularly acts for the defence and prosecution in cases concerning the illegal importation and supply of drugs, murder and manslaughter, and as a specialist prosecutor of serious sexual offences is involved in rape cases.

He also has extensive experience in personal injury cases and has represented individuals and companies in fatal accident cases, including attendance at inquests.
