Army explosive experts were called to Nafferton, near Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire, after villagers found the “inert” two-pound aircraft bomb beneath a grass verge.

The area near railway tracks was cordoned off to prevent vibrations from trains setting the device off, Humberside Police said.

A photo was sent to Army bomb disposal crews who took the device away last night.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: “At 5.45pm police were informed that local people in Nafferton who were digging flowerbeds for the village in bloom competition had unearthed what they believed to be a World War II-style bomb on the grass verge next to Nafferton railway station.”

The spokesman said it turned out to be a two-pound aircraft bomb, adding: “At 8pm the bomb disposal unit from the Army turned up.

“They identified the object as an inert bomb. They collected it and took it away for disposal so the roads and railway lines are now back up and running as normal.”

Trains on the Bridlington to Driffield line were temporarily stopped as a precaution, he said.
