Yorkshire city ranked one of worst in UK for traffic jams in sat nav survey

BRADFORD is suffering from some of the worst traffic congestion in the country according to new figures.

Sat nav firm TomTom measured the top 50 most congested areas across Britain over the past six months with the West Yorkshire town coming out in fifth place.

But Neil Moore, Bradford Council Senior Transport Planner, questioned the findings. “We use data collected by the Department of Transport to assess congestion levels across the district and it places Bradford 56th out of 152 local authorities in terms of average speed in the morning peak period. On the A roads the average speed was 20.2 mph in 2009/10, which is a slight improvement on 18.9 mph recorded the previous year. Tong Street (A650) inbound is the most congested route into Bradford with speeds averaging 13.8 mph.”

He added that West Yorkshire local authorities were also successful in bidding for £5m funding recently which “will deliver a range of projects to encourage walking, cycling and public transport use in the Bradford district.”

The top 10 most traffic clogged cities, according to TomTom, were 1, London, 2, Edinburgh, 3, Oxford, 4, Belfast, 5, Bradford, 6, Manchester, 7, Birmingham, 8 Aberdeen, 9, Southampton, 10 Nottingham.
