Yorkshire colleges given £20m to help build better future
Business Secretary Vince Cable announced yesterday that £232.7m was being invested in more than 50 schemes nationally matched with more than £250m investment from colleges.
Leeds City College will receive £8.9m towards a £9.9m plan to refurbish the grade II-listed Printhalls building at its Printworks campus. The Government said the funding will allow the college to develop a new vocational centre training students on engineering, manufacturing, electrical and motor vehicle courses.

Hide AdThe scheme will also provide a new hall to accommodate hair and beauty courses and a learning resource centre.
The Government said the development would help address skills shortages across the Leeds City Region in mechanical engineering and the low-carbon economy.
The college’s deputy principal for corporate services, Jane Pither, said: “The campus is very important to us as a major investment for the future benefit of our students, employers and the wider community in Leeds and as part of the opening up of the southern part of the city.”
Sheffield College will get £9.9m toward a £15.5m plan to create centres of excellence in engineering and advanced manufacturing, sustainable development and the creative and digital industries.

Hide AdBarnsley College is to receive £1.2m towards a £3.8m plan to create a sport and public service centre.
Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Our commitment to support modern, well-equipped colleges and training centres to train the next generation sits alongside the Government’s industrial strategy giving business the confidence to invest in the long term.
“For Britain to compete, we need the very best training centres, staffed with the very best trainers. This is why I can confirm that a further £330m will also be available for skills capital investment through the Local Growth Fund in 2016-17.
“This investment, along with these 50 or so new college capital projects, takes total government capital investment in FE colleges since May 2010 to over £1.5bn.”
