Yorkshire delicatessen sold to Thomas chain

The owners of the Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley, have sold a business they acquired five years ago to another local entrepreneur.

Andrew and Jacquie Pern bought The Star in 1996 and have built a national reputation and a local business empire on it.

Earlier this year, they revealed their marriage was over but have continued to work together.

Their business had expanded to include the Corner Shop and the Pheasant Inn in Harome; Perns delicatessen, butchers and wine merchants, in Helmsley; and a fishmongers, Star Fish, next door to Perns.

It was announced yesterday that Perns had been sold to Thomas the Baker, a regional chain started by John Thomas with a bakery in Helmsley and a shop in Malton.

Mr Thomas said Perns would keep going, with the existing 10 staff and the same range of produce but the name would change at Christmas.

Mr and Mrs Pern said: "The opportunity to take over The Pheasant Hotel in Harome last year was exciting and one year on, we are now sure that the hotel and restaurant business is really what we do best."
