Yorkshire goes for the burn as Torch on its way

Torchbearers will carry the flame to Hull from Middlesbrough via the East coast on Monday.

In the morning it will travel to Filey via Hinderwell, Lythe, Sandsend, Whitby and Scarborough.

Some the flame’s journey will be done in convoy mode, when it will not be visible to the public.

However, there will be plenty of opportunities for people who want to catch a glimpse of it to line the streets.

Scarborough Borough Council expects the biggest crowds to gather in the centre of Whitby, along the north and south bays in Scarborough and in the centre of Filey.

Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Borough Council’s lead councillor for London 2012-inspired events, said: “I encourage all our communities to line the streets where the Torch will be visible and celebrate our moment to shine.”

From Filey, the torch will move on to Bridlington, then to Beverley and finally Hull just before 5pm.

Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder with responsibility for leisure and culture, said: “Those who watch the relay and take part in the celebrations will remember it for rest of their lives. We will also get to show off some fantastic parts of our city.”

On Tuesday it will set out on its journey to York, departing from The Deep.

From there, it will pass through Brough, Goole, Camblesforth, Selby, Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash, Tadcaster, Boston Spa and Wetherby before a lunch stop at Harewood House.

The relay will then journey via Knaresborough, Harrogate, Fountains Abbey and Ripon before arriving in York, where the route will take in the historic city walls, The Shambles and the racecourse.

On Wednesday, the flame will depart from York Minster and make its way to the National Railway Museum and travel to Thirsk by train.

From there, it will make its way via Northallerton, Aiskew and Bedale to the spectacular Aysgarth Falls in Lower Wensleydale and it will journey through Leyburn to Richmond, where there will be a lunch stop at Richmond School.

Torchbearers will then carry the flame out of Yorkshire to Carlisle.

It will return to the county on June 24 for four days as it makes its way from Manchester to Leeds and then into South Yorkshire.
