Yorkshire may be home to Holocaust memorial

HUDDERSFIELD could become the home to the only Holocaust memorial in the North.

Arts Council England has provided money to investigate the possibility of a new and permanent outdoor piece of art at one of three possible sites – Huddersfield University, Greenhead Park or Huddersfield New College.

Kirklees Council was awarded the funding following critical acclaim of sculptor Antonia Stowe’s 6 million + installation.

It consisted of over six million buttons and was housed initially at Huddersfield Art Gallery.

Over six years the indoor installation has been displayed in a variety of public venues across Britain.

The proposed memorial is expected to feature buttons but has to be a solid outdoor sculpture.

Antonia Stowe and others will visit other Holocaust memorials to get insight and inspiration for the Huddersfield memorial.

The project will include working with schools to develop the design, Thought needs to be given to how people will still be able to touch and be moved by the sculpture as it changes from loose buttons on a floor to a solid outdoor piece of art.
