Yorkshire mountain climber killed in Lake District

A MOUNTAIN climber from North Yorkshire has died and another has been seriously injured after they fell in the Lake District.

Walkers found the pair on Great Gable mountain at Wasdale at about 1.30pm on Sunday.

Police named the dead man as Alan Turner, 54, from Winton, Northallerton.

The other climber, a man believed to be aged in his 50s from the County Durham area, is recovering in hospital from serious injuries.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team attended and, assisted by RAF Boulmer, the men were airlifted to hospital. The injured man remains in a stable condition in West Cumberland hospital.

"The coroner and Mr Turner's immediate family have been informed."
