Yorkshire music festival lines up awards

HUDDERSFIELD Contemporary Music Festival tops the list of nominations for Britain's most important classical music awards, to be presented next month.

The festival, founded in 1978 and held in November, has three nominations in the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards. It is up against City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's Stravinsky Festival, London's Southbank Centre and the Wigmore Hall in the Concert Series and Festivals award.

It is also nominated for the Music Award for Education, for its performance of Kristoffer Zeggars' Piano Phasing featuring 50 local pianists, and for the Chamber Scale Composition category for Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay's composition for piano and electronics.

The awards are presented in association with BBC Radio 3, and the winners will be announced at London's Dorchester Hotel on May 11. Radio 3 will broadcast from the ceremony the following day at 7pm.

Festival artistic director Graham McKenzie said: "These award nominations represent a very proud moment for HCMF which, with a small team and a 'regional' location, continues to shine on both national and international stages.

"HCMF is driven by innovation – in the work it showcases, its relationships and collaboration with artists and composers, the nature of its partnerships throughout Europe and beyond and its imaginative learning and participation events.

"It is really rewarding to have our efforts and achievements recognised and we now have our fingers crossed for May 11."
