Yorkshire Paras welcomed home as nation pays homage to armed forces

A FINAL day of celebrations dedicated to the nation’s servicemen and women saw a homecoming parade by the 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment in Leeds yesterday.

The regiment, based at Thornbury Barracks near Pudsey, Leeds, have recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Lord Mayor of Leeds Coun Alan Taylor said: “We are pleased to welcome home the 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment and they are especially welcome as we mark Armed Forces Day.”

Yesterday 4 Para paraded through Leeds as part of a number of activities throughout Yorkshire and the rest of the country including street parties and parades.

On Saturday around 100,000 people flocked to Edinburgh, this year’s host city, to watch a parade of over 2,000 military personnel, past and present, march down the Royal Mile to mark the third annual UK Armed Forces Day.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall watched the parade, before meeting veterans and families of those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Yesterday Camilla, who is known as the Duchess of Rothesay when she visits Scotland, attended a massed pipes and drums parade, which also took place along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
