Yorkshire Post honoured in regional media awards

THE Yorkshire Post has retained its title as the region's premier newspaper at this year's Media Awards for Yorkshire and The Humber, which are sponsored by the mobile phone company O2.

The Yorkshire Post was voted Best Daily Newspaper and O2's Best Overall Newspaper at the awards, which honour the region's finest writers, broadcasters and photographers.

The judges said the Yorkshire Post was "a great overall package" with lots of hard news and superb feature sections.

The judges added: "Its Saturday edition also has a really excellent weekend magazine thrown in."

The paper also won the Scoop of the Year award for reporter Rob Waugh's exposure of the "cavalier" use of public money at Leeds Metropolitan University.

The judges said: "It was a fine example of good investigative journalism which also had a tremendous impact on the local community."

Yorkshire Post Digital Editor David Behrens retained the Digital Journalist of the Year title, while his colleague Nick Westby was highly commended in this category.

The judges said of David's winning entry: "He displays an impressive mix of communication skills and techniques peppered with some much needed fun and frivolity."

Four Yorkshire Post journalists were highly commended in other categories. They were Business Editor Bernard Ginns, and Deputy Business Editor Greg Wright (Business Journalist of the year) Simon Hulme (Photographer of the Year) and Tom Richmond (Feature Writer of the Year and Sports Journalist of the Year).

A special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in memory of Nigel Scott, the former Business Editor of our sister paper, the Yorkshire Evening Post, who died last year after a courageous battle with cancer. His award was collected by his widow Melanie and daughters Emily and Eleanor.

The event, which was held at The Loft in Leeds city centre, attracted newspaper journalists and broadcasters from across the region.
