The Yorkshire Post Says: While HS2 debate rages, Eurostar highlights Doncaster's bright future

The debate about the HS2 high-speed railway line continues to be dominated by concerns about its cost and route, not least in South Yorkshire.

It’s not focusing sufficiently on the issue of capacity – the existing Victorian infrastructure can’t handle any more trains – and the potential benefits of the National College for High Speed Rail which is due to open in Doncaster next month.

As such, the symbolism was striking when a recently mothballed Eurostar power car, which whisked passengers between London, Brussels and Paris at speeds of 180mph, was delivered to the college, albeit by road, where it will have a new lease of life educating Britain’s next generation of engineers.

In a proud railway town which will always be synonymous with the Flying Scotsman, the college will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity for British engineers to learn the special skills critical to the future of the railways so that passengers can look forward to a service which is the envy of the world.

Given the extent to which transport investment is skewed in London’s favour, it’s only right to publicly acknowledge the wider significance of this centre, its presence here and the opportunities that will be created in an area which can no longer be sustained by past glories.
