Yorkshire Pub of the Week: The New Inn, Tholthorpe

For a pub called the New Inn, the Tholthorpe local certainly seems to have a bit of age to it, and here we have that rare thing indeed, a proper 'community local', since it also serves as the village shop.

Tholthorpe is tiny and it sits just north of York.

The New Inn is a shining example of a quintessentially “proper pub”. It looks lovely, to one side is the green and the pond, across the road are cottages that would do credit to any chocolate box, and there is a small but comfy seating area to the right of the main door.

Inside it is a random higgle-piggle of nooks and snugs, some more given to dining than others. The place has its own wood-fired stove, called Eleanor, which is fired up on selected nights. The bar itself is straight ahead of you as you enter. There is a good John Smith and the other day there was also a welcome pint from the Snaith Brewery.

The New Inn has both quiz nights and poker nights, and the kitchen is open from noon, with a more than reasonable selection of food. It has to be said that the generous serving of fish and chips that turned up at my table was possibly the best I have ever eaten in a pub.

It’s an informal, ad hoc place, not given over (thank heavens!) to whimsical decor, where, even if you are a complete stranger, other drinkers will give you a “how do?” and a friendly nod of welcome. Parking is ample, the loos are spotless, and the (occasional) 29 bus that meanders from York to Easingwold stops next door. A gilt-edged find.
