Derby, Birmingham and Manchester are Doncaster’s competition for the college which the Government is establishing to train rail engineers to build HS2.

It is also hoped the college will help establish the UK as world experts in high speed rail engineering.

Doncaster executive mayor Ros Jones said: “This is a major achievement and testament to the partnership approach we have taken to get us into the top four.

“We are a rail town with a rich history of leading the way in rail and engineering.

“By choosing Doncaster, the Government will spread the benefit of HS2 to other parts of the country and help rebalance the national economy. We want to bring rail home.”

York and Leeds had also submitted bids but failed to make the shortlist.

York Council leader James Alexander said: “Some you win and some you lose.

York has a long and proud tradition of excellence in this industry and it’s important that we continue to attempt to seize opportunities like this. Whilst we now get to work on other options, I back Doncaster’s bid to bring the Rail College to Yorkshire.”
