Yorkshire stores on Thomas Cook closure list are named

TRAVEL firm Thomas Cook has revealed which stores in Yorkshire it proposes to close as part of cull of 195 travel agencies nationwide.

The company wants to close 30 Thomas Cook or Co-operative Travel stores in the Yorkshire area which is expected to lead to over 150 job losses.

The list includes Thomas Cook stores in Moortown; Seacroft Green; Batley; Bradford Kirkgate; Cottingham; Middlesbrough Parkway; and in Sainsbury’s, Harrogate.

Co-operative Travel stores on the closure list include Crossgates shopping centre; Carlton Street, Castleford; Horbury, Wakefield; Ilkley Station; Main Street, Garforth; Heckmondwike; Lowtown, Pudsey; Cliffe Court, Yeadon; Northallerton, All Saints Square, Rotherham; Denby Dale; two stores on Boothferry Road, Goole; Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth; Banner Cross, Sheffield; Crosspool, Sheffield; Stocksbridge; Birkenshaw, Bradford; and Bradford Kirkgate.

And Ilkeston Co-operative Travel stores in Pinstone Street, Sheffield; Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster; and Effingham Street, Rotherham, are also on the list.

There are currently 102 Thomas Cook and Co-operative Travel stores across Yorkshire. The closure plans are expected to reduce the number to just over 70.

Nationally, the job losses announced last week amount to 2,500.

A company spokeswoman said stores were chosen for closure either because they were under performing, because another store was in close proximity or because a shop lease was due to expire.

She said the majority of those in Yorkshire were not meeting targets and almost half have another store in the same town.

Thomas Cook has entered into a 90-day consultation with staff.

Yorkshire/North east will lose 35 stores, the third highest number after the Midlands (48) and London/South (36).
