Young actors take to stage at festival

SOUTH Yorkshire Youth Drama Festival, which has provided a springboard for young actors to launch professional careers, will take place at Barnsley Lamproom Theatre this summer.

The festival provides the opportunity for wannabe stars to perform in front of an audience and an adjudicator from the Guild of Drama, with the support of professional technical staff.

Festival organisers are, however, still looking for a sponsor to back the event, which takes place from June 29 to July 2.

A spokeswoman said: "Many of the previous participants in the festival have gone on to pursue careers in the drama business, some appearing on television, some writing their own material and many to continue their studies at drama schools and universities.

"At the last festival a Young Achievement award was introduced and was awarded to Birkwood Primary School in Cudworth for their production of Alice.

"We are keen to encourage other younger groups interested in taking part this year.

Anyone who may be able to offer sponsorship for the event, or any groups of young people, aged under 21, who are interested in taking part should telephone 01226 200075.
