Young artists rise to challenge of creating biggest outdoor mural

YOUNG artists were set the task of creating the biggest outdoor painting in Barnsley as part of a project to keep children occupied during the school summer holidays.

The mural has been painted on a wall overlooking the visitors' car park at Barnsley FC's Oakwell ground and will be seen by thousands of fans coming to football fixtures.

Professional painters Peter Deakin and Vera Petrenko led the group which created the 87ft by 7ft work, which depicts town landmarks and says Welcome to Barnsley.

The whole project was funded and supported by the council's Barnsley town centre partnership and was co-ordinated by youth worker Jade Bligh.

Mr Deakin said yesterday: "We started with a blank wall on Monday and by the end of the day tomorrow we will have a complete artwork to welcome people to the town.

"The young people have worked extremely hard, and while most of them are not artists, they have spent hours making sure that their piece of the mural is the best it can possibly be.

"It was meant to be viewed from a distance, but because of all the work, there are some little details like snails and even a peregrine falcon that can be seen on closer inspection."
