Young challenged on ideas for city

YOUNG people across Leeds have been asked for their ideas on how to change or improve Leeds if they were made mayor for a day.

Leeds City Council’s annual Mayor For a Day competition involves pupils from schools across Leeds submitting manifestos and posters with their ideas of how to improve the city.

This year, pupils from year six have been invited to submit their proposals, which were then shortlisted down to a final ten by a panel of councillors and youth councillors.

The ten finalists will be invited for tea with the Lord Mayor on Thursday, November 18, where the winner will also be announced.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Jim McKenna, said: “The mayor for a day competition is a brilliant opportunity for young people to get involved with local democracy and learn about the working of their local council.

“By getting young people involved in this competition, we hope it will inspire them to get involved with their local school councils.”

The overall winning manifesto will be presented by the author at a full council meeting in front of the city’s 99 councillors.
