Young cyclist helps with school fundraising

Eleven-year-old Roscoe Savage has cycled 200 miles across England in five days to raise money for his village primary school's new playground, even though he will never get to enjoy playing there.

Roscoe, from Fountains Church of England Primary School in Grantley, near Ripon, is leaving to go to Ripon Grammar School in September.

Accompanied by his father, he braved strong winds and driving rain to raise more than 200 for the new 20,000 playground at Fountains.

Father and son set off from the Irish Sea at St Bees, in Cumbria, and pedalled mostly off-road through the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales and Moors to reach the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay .

'I started Fountains School when I was four and have really enjoyed my time there. I just wanted to say 'thank you' to everyone there before I leave,' said the intrepid young cyclist.

After the ride, headteacher Mrs Jill Pemberton said: 'We are all very proud of Roscoe's achievement and pleased that he wants to contribute to our exciting new playground project.

'We have lovely grounds here and it would be a shame not to make more of them.'
