Young handler taking stock of her lineage

YOUNG handler Frances Griffiths will be looking to follow in the footsteps of her parents when she takes to the ring at this year's Great Yorkshire Show.

Frances, 17, shows Holstein dairy cattle and has already won a number of rosettes for her skills at local shows.

Tickets for this year's Great Yorkshire Show go on sale on Monday, March 1 and to whet appetites the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at what is involved in showing livestock.

Through an online video series viewers can watch as Frances prepares to compete at the event which runs from Tuesday, July 13 to Thursday, July 15 at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

The cameras will chart Frances's progress, from selecting a potential prize winner from her family's herd at Gunthwaite Hall Farm, near Penistone, to her actually entering the ring in front of a crowd of hundreds.

Frances said: "I really enjoy showing, it's great fun, particularly the social side.

"In fact, the only down side is having to get up at 4am on a show morning which I'm not too keen on.

"I have shown before. Some of my friends from non-farming backgrounds do not really get it but if they came along to the show they would have a great time – there is something for everyone."

Frances's parents, Edward and Jenny Griffiths, have plenty of rosettes to prove their enjoyment of showing Holstein cattle around the country. In addition, Mr Griffiths has experience from both sides of the fence as he is a respected national judge of Holstein cattle as well as being a member of the Great Yorkshire Show Cattle committee.

The online series will be broadcast from www.greatyorkshireshow.co.uk and follows the success of last year's Lamb's Tale series in which thousands of surfers followed North Yorkshire farmer Mark Elliott and his prize-winning Wensleydale lamb preparing for the 2009 show. It can also be viewed at www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/video

Some 125,000 visitors are expected at this year's show, which is now the country's top agricultural show following the demise of the Royal Show in 2009. Tickets can be purchased by ringing 01423 541222.
