Young leaders seek support in marathon

Workers at a charity which helps young people develop leadership skills have appealed for athletes to support them when they run in the Sheffield Half Marathon later this year.

The Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders (SAYLS) draws teenagers from the city’s secondary schools and helps them develop skills which are useful both in volunteering and the workplace.

SAYLS is one of 10 charities which will benefit from proceeds raised by the half marathon, which takes place in the city on Sunday, May 12, and it is keen to maximise its benefit.

Chris Millard, who has undertaken training with SAYLS and is currently on a work placement as a development officer, said runners should indicate on their entry form that they want to support the charity.

He added: “We need people to sign up to run the half marathon for us. SAYLS is dedicated to getting young volunteers involved in events, from those in the community to national and even world events such as the London Olympics.

“People who are applying for the race on the half marathon website can give us their support by putting SAYLS into the box on the entry form which asks which charity you are supporting”.

Organisers of the half marathon said they hoped entries would top 10,000 this year, meaning SAYLS and the other nine charities could be in for a major cash windfall for their work.
