Young players ready to pull strings

MORE than 400 primary school children from Hull are joining up to become the biggest ever string ensemble to perform in the city.

The stage of City Hall will become a performance stage for the eight and nine-year-olds from 13 primary schools next Tuesday.

The youngsters will rehearse together before giving a performance to invited guests at 1pm.

The children will be supported by the City of Hull Youth String Orchestra and will perform a variety of songs and pieces including Beethoven’s Hymn to Joy and the Can-Can.

The pupils are all involved in the national “Wider Opportunities” programme that gives youngsters to chance to play musical instruments at school.

Dominic Wright, head of strings with Hull Music Service, which is organising the concert, said: “A massed strings concert such as this is a first for Hull!

“It will be a sensational experience for the children to perform at such a prestigious venue; they are very much looking forward to it.”

The primary schools taking part are: Alderman Cogan, Broadacre, Cleeve, Eastfield, Endsleigh Holy Child, Griffin, Holy Name, Longhill, Priory, St James, St Richards, Thanet and Westcott.
