Young sculptors make a big noise at gallery

Artist Johnny White, joined Josh Elliott, 16, one of nine young sculptors from Hull who have seen their work take centre stage in a new exhibition at the city's leading art gallery.

Nine people from city youth project The Warren have unveiled a 15ft metal sculpture at the Ferens as part of a wider display, Manic Mechanics, by established artists Mr White and Amanda Wray.

The results are a collaboration between the artists, Hull Council's museums' service and Hull College.

Sculptors from The Warren had four days to design and create their pieces from scrap metal after visiting the gallery for inspiration. Their offerings are pieced together in a boat and include Olympic Torch, by Gholam Nazary, Tin Robot by Richard Wilkes, Copper Load of This! by Jade Washing, and Josh Elliot's Bits 'n' Bobs.

Visitors can bring some of the sculptures to life by peddling a bicycle, pressing buttons or moving levers.

Assistant curator Claire Longrigg said: "This is the kind of exhibition you will want to see again and again. It will be noisy, colourful and exciting."

The exhibition is free and runs until September 5.
