Young widow to scale Peaks in memorial fundraising trek

THE widow of a young man who died after a collision with a lorry as he walked home from the Leeds Festival will scale the Yorkshire Three Peaks on the first anniversary of her husband's death.

Kim Kennedy, 28, from Acomb in York, is planning to climb Peny-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in memory of her husband, Andrew, and to raise funds for the road safety charity, Brake.

She will join a group of 12 other walkers for the hike on Saturday, August 28, before reaching the last peak two days later on the Bank Holiday Monday.

Mrs Kennedy said: "Since the tragic death of my husband, Brake has offered me and Andrew's family an invaluable level of support.

"This has included help over the telephone, helping us liaise with the police and coroner's office, and now also with trying to get a memorial at the place where Andrew was killed.

"Brake is an amazing charity which offers endless support to bereaved people like me.

"By taking part in the Three Peaks Walk I know that I am raising money for Brake, who are in turn then helping other families who have experienced the loss of somebody in similar tragic circumstances."

Mr Kennedy died in Leeds General Infirmary after suffering head injuries at about 10.30pm on August 28 last year.

The 27-year-old, who worked for a recruitment firm in Harrogate, was struck by a lorry travelling towards Tadcaster from Headley Bar as he walked along the A659 having spent the day at the bank holiday weekend music festival.

Brake's fundraising manager Katie Shephard, said: "Kim is undertaking a fantastic challenge, which will take a lot of determination."
