Youngsters get the chance to see inside new £3.4m centre

DIGNITARIES were joined by young people at the official opening of a multi-million pound youth centre in Rotherham which aims to reduce levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The £3.4m MyPlace centre has been built on a site next to St Ann’s roundabout in Rotherham and offers what council chiefs called “state-of-the art facilities” for young people.

It was officially opened at the weekend by the Mayor of Rotherham Shaun Wright, with the ceremony followed by an open day for young people to give them the chance to look round.

The development is part of the national Myplace initiative and has been led by the Chantry YMCA and supported by Rotherham Council and other local agencies.

The “youth hub” includes facilities for youngsters aged 11-19, such as a graffiti art room, IT suite, cinema, performance hall and café. It will also act as a base for agencies working with teenagers.

Coun Mahroof Hussain, Rotherham Council’s spokesman on youth issues said: “This project is the flagship for the future of services for young people and what has been achieved is amazing.

“This is another example of groups in Rotherham coming together to create a new venture which will help meet the needs and aspirations of young people and it will be fantastic to see it full of young people.”

The new centre has been designed by Rotherham MBC’s Environmental and Development Services’ in-house architects and was built by Wildgoose Construction.
