Youth club wrecked in 'pointless' raid

A THUG went berserk in a Harrogate youth club – causing more than £1,000 damage – before escaping with a haul of just £15 in an "utterly pointless" raid, police said yesterday.

After smashing his way into Bilton Youth Club by breaking a window, he then left a trail of destruction, damaging fittings and a pool table used by the young people.

Yesterday, police appealed for information about the burglary which happened just after midnight on Tuesday. It is thought the intruder may have been sitting outside the club earlier on Monday evening with a group of other youths.

After his companions left at about 11.45pm, the youth made an unsuccessful attempt to break in and left the scene. He then returned a few minutes later and broke windows in the door to get in.

Sgt Ben Ralston, of the Harrogate Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "This was an utterly pointless crime which achieved nothing but spoil a facility enjoyed by local youngsters. The sooner that the person responsible the is arrested and brought to justice the better."

Anyone with information about the burglary, especially the group of youths sitting outside the club, is asked to contact police on 0845 6060247 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
