Youth group given sporting chance by community fund

YOUNG people in Hedon are being given the chance to take part in a range of sports and activities thanks to a grant from The Co-operative Community Fund.

Hedon Youth Group has received £480 to fund group activities and games for the group headquarters.

Group leader Diane Storr said: “This generous grant from The Co-operative will allow us fund group activities for our local young people, including ten pin bowling and ice-skating.

“We will also use the funding to buy games and activities for our headquarters in Hedon, to keep our group members entertained.

“We plan to use the funding to buy goal nets and a table tennis table – which our members are really looking forward to.”

She added: “Without local funding like this, running the group would be difficult for us.”

The fund is created by members of The Co-operative Group who elect to donate all, or part, of their twice-yearly dividend payments directly to the scheme. The funds are then shared with local community projects and groups across the country.

Co-operative members receive a payment twice a year based on the points they earn when they trade at any of the group’s businesses, including The Co-operative Food, Travel, Pharmacy and Funeralcare, as well as The Co-operative Bank, Smile and The Co-operative Insurance.

Giles Hall, Co-op membership officer for the North, said: “It’s a scheme we’re very proud of, not only because it gives us the chance to thank members for shopping with us, but because so many people choose to give something back to local communities.”
