The Welcome to Yorkshire tourism agency’s Le Jardin de Yorkshire was yesterday awarded a silver gilt prize at the RHS flower show, which is in its centenary year.

Le Jardin de Yorkshire marks the county’s successful bid to host the opening stages of the Tour de France cycle race in 2014.

The award was confirmed on the day Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme and five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault visited Chelsea to see the garden.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity said: “To receive silver gilt at the world’s greatest flower show in its 100th year is not just a proud moment for Le Jardin de Yorkshire but for all the people who have worked on it and of course all the great gardens of Yorkshire who we are promoting as part of our entry at Chelsea.”

There were eye-opening scenes as the best show garden prize at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) event went to an Australian team for the first time.

Tim Wilkinson, a volunteer who had flown in from the other side of the world to put the Trailfinders Australian Garden together, celebrated by jumping into a pool wearing only his underwear. An RHS spokeswoman said: “We’re overjoyed that they are so pleased about the award.”

A garden designed for Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity received a silver gilt medal. Family-run business Blackmore & Langton, which has been at every Chelsea show since 1913, won the president’s award, given to the RHS president’s favourite exhibit, for a display of begonias and delphiniums.

The show is open to the public until Saturday.
