Barnsley’s only Lib Dem councillor has been selected as the party’s Parliamentary candidate for the Penistone and Stocksbridge seat in the next general election.
Hannah Kitching was elected onto Barnsley Council earlier this year and represents the Penistone West ward, with her appointment giving Barnsley its first Lib Dem representation on the council for years.
She has been selected to challenge the seat, currently held by Labour MP Angela Smith, by the Penistone and Stocksbridge Liberal Democrats.
Coun Kitching lives just outside Penistone and owns a manufacturing business in Sheffield with her husband James, exporting precision steel tools to a global market.
She said: “There are lots of issues which need addressing here – from the dreadful state of our public transport system to the lack of broadband in our rural areas, the chronic underfunding of our schools to the crisis in mental health services and social care.”
Sheffield Lib Dem leader Shaffaq Mohammed said: “It is excellent news that Hannah has been selected to run for Parliament. Our city needs strong Liberal voices and I know Hannah will speak up for Penistone, Stocksbridge and North Sheffield with a loud and clear voice. She’s a proven campaigner who knows what it takes to win, and I’m looking forward to getting out on the campaign trail with her right away.”
