A bunch of flowers, a card and a fancy meal out usually suffice for Valentine’s Day, but some may way want to go the whole hog and get down on one knee for the one they love this year.
Now Poundland is providing the ring – for just £1.
So-called ‘Bling Rings’ have been spotted in the budget chain’s stores, and sparked an intense debate on a Facebook page called ‘Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK’.
A photo posted there shows a silver ring with a red jewel in a heart-shaped box, with the slogan “because we promise they’ll want to choose their own”.
‘The best idea ever’?
The response to the product has been divided. While some have praised the concept of using the rings as a placeholder, others have called out Poundland for being tacky.
One commenter even went so far as to dub the rings “the best idea ever.”
“Buy a cheap ring from Poundland to propose,” they said, “then go to the shop so you can pick a proper one together.”
“Why would anyone want to pick their own ring?” responded one poster. “Isn’t the point of it that the man you love has chosen it for you?”
One person added, “Nothing says undying love like an engagement ring from Poundland.”
‘They’ll want to choose their own’
The Bling Rings come in a variety of colours and sizes, and are available in silver and gold, with gemstones resembling diamonds, rubies and topaz.
Part of Poundland’s new Valentine’s range, the high street store told the Press Association, “These are beautiful placeholder rings because we know they’ll want to buy their own”, and even went so far as to say they hope the budget rings become a common fixture of the proposal procedure.
“We’re looking forward to the Poundland proposal becoming the way it’s done. Our bling ring is setting the scene for the real deal,” they said.
