Rotherham United land long-time target Ryan Giles

Giles was recalled from a loan spell at the Millers' Championship rivals Coventry City earler this week by Wolves and has now headed north for the rest of the season to the Millers - who have made previous attempts to try and sign the Telford-born player, who celebrates his 21st birthday today.

The wing-back was due to remain with the Sky Blues for the whole season but the agreement was ended early after he was left out of their squad against Reading last week – as one of six loan players, with only five allowed on a match-day.

On signing Giles, who has played 21 times for the Sky Blues this season and has become the club's first signing of the January window, Warne said: "He is a player we have liked for a couple of years. He is someone I have tried to sign before.

"He's a left wing-back. He can play left-back or left wing but I think left wing-back is his best position. He's played 40-odd games. He is quick and direct and puts crosses into the box. He is got a good footballing brain and has a bit of experience in this league having played 19 times in it this season for Coventry.

"We are playing with wing-backs and have recently let Billy Jones go, so we needed a bit more strength in that position. He's a good addition for us.

"As a full-back, he's a little bit like Trev (Clarke), I suppose and more attacking than Joe Mattock. He is more of a winger than a a full-back and wing-back is the perfect position for him.

"The way we want to get crosses into the box, he definitely suits us.

"Most of the players we sign have a bit of versatility because we do change the system and ask people to play out of position. He can play anywhere down that left side."
