It was reported former Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield manager Cook turned down the chance to be in charge until the end of the season.

The Owls have been without a permanent manager since sacking Tony Pulis at the end of December.

“I applied for the job when Tony Pulis took the job (in November) and I wasn’t considered, I never got a phone call,” said Cook. “The second time around I didn’t see the point in applying but I have had contact with Sheffield Wednesday.”

The Owls chairman responded: “My colleagues have told me Paul Cook has been interviewed and was offered a short-term contract. It is not true.”

It had been suggested what put Cook off the job – and the vacancy at Cardiff City – was concerns about not having the final say on transfers.

“If anything, I give the coaches too much authority,” insisted Chansiri, who looks increasingly unlikely to appoint a manager before Monday’s transfer deadline.

There were reports yesterday the Owls had spoken to former Huddersfield Town director of football David Webb about a similar position at Hillsborough.
