Adams takes Sheffield United job as McCall heads to Motherwell

Ada has left his post as manager of League Two high-fliers Port Vale to become the third manager at Bramall Lane this season, following Kevin Blackwell and Gary Speed.

John Carver also took caretaker charge for three games.

United have agreed to compensate Vale.

Former Blades player Alan Cork will be Adams' number two, while caretaker manager John Carver and assistant boss Sam Ellis have left the club.

Adams, 49, was born in Sheffield and is a lifelong Blades supporter.

He has spent the last 18 months at Vale, who are currently second in the League Two table, and has managed eight other clubs over the last 14 years including Fulham, Coventry City and Leicester City.

The Blades lost manager Speed to the Wales job shortly before Christmas and coach Carver, who stepped in as caretaker-manager, has lost two of his first three games in charge.

Meanwhile, former Bradford City manager Stuart McCall has been unveiled as the new manager of Scottish Premier Division club Motherwell.

Ex-Blades assistant McCall stepped down as Bradford City manager ten months ago and has beaten off competition from former Doncaster Rovers manager Dave Penney to land the job at Fir Park.
