Anderson awaits as Murray plots Montreal treble

Andy Murray faces South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal as the British No 1 seeks a hat-trick of victories in the tournament.

While Murray enjoyed a first-round bye, the 6ft 8ins South African showed some fine form to take a 6-4 6-4 straight-sets victory over Spains’s Pablo Andujar.

Anderson, currently ranked 35th in the world, saved four out of five break points in his opening victory, breaking Andujar three times.

The second-round tie between Murray and Olympic bronze medalist Anderson is set to get underway on Centre Court on Tuesday at 2:00 pm local time.

Murray, seeded fourth in Montreal, has won the Rogers Cup title in each of the last two years and will match Ivan Lendl’s feat of victories from 1987 to 1989 should he win this week.

Elsewhere in the draw, Swiss 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka continued his fine record in Montreal against Argentina’s David Nalbandian, earning a 6-1 6-4 victory in one hour and nine minutes.

Top seed Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, has been drawn against Nikolay Davydenko, who defeated Flavio Cipolla 6-3 6-3.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, a defeated semi-finalist at Wimbledon, overcame Italian No 1 Fabio Fognini 6-4 7-6 (7/0), while Australian teenager Bernard Tomic, who also impressed at SW19, edged past Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

It was a less enjoyable first round for former world No 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who went out in a shock 3-6 6-1 7-5 defeat to Latvian wild card Ernests Gulbis.
