Appeal over ban by jockey Jacob

GRAND National-winning jockey Daryl Jacob is to appeal against the 10-day ban that could rule him out of the lucrative Christmas and New Year racing programme.

Jacob led over the final flight at Wincanton last Thursday aboard Ulis De Bassy when he appeared to mistake a path across the track for the winning line. He was then headed in the final 100 yards by Quaddick Lake.

Jacob, No 2 jockey to Ruby Walsh at the yard of champion trainer Paul Nicholls, had been in line for the mount on Kauto Stone in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day after partnering him to victory at Down Royal last month.

The appeal will be held on Thursday, the same day that trainer Oliver Sherwood and jockey Leighton Aspell intend to contest the punishments that they received over the running and riding of Furrows at Hereford last week.

Sherwood was fined £3,000 while Aspell was hit with a 14-day ban and the horse was prevented from running for 40 days after stewards concluded that Furrows was not ridden to his potential.

No weather problems are expected at Doncaster for their Saturday card.

Overnight frost is expected tonight and tomorrow, but rain is forecast later in the week.
