Athletics: City of Sheffield begin their British League Premier Division campaign at Lee Valley, London, today (Sat).

Sixth of the eight teams last year, Sheffield should hold their own against the leading clubs in the country.

There is a Sheffield debut for Eritrean distance runner Weynay Ghebresilasie. Based in the north-east, Ghebresilasie has signed for Sheffield for British League competition and runs the 5000m. With Matt Bowser as his B string partner, it is a strong event for Sheffield.

Jamie Williamson should be a big points scorer for Sheffield in the shot and discus and he also throws the hammer.

The pole vault is a strong event for Sheffield with the experienced Luke Cutts paired with Adam Hague, 15.

Shaftsbury Barnet defend their title and Sheffield also have to contend with Newnham and Essex, Woodford Green, City of Manchester (Sale), Birchfield, Enfield and Haringey, and Herne Hill.

The SIG Sheffield Half Marathon is tomorrow, starting andt finishing at the Don Valley Stadium for the last time. Last year’s winner, John Franklin (Metropolitan Police) heads the big entry.

The race, which incorporates the Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Championships, starts at 9.0 am.

In an unfortunate clash of dates, the Leeds Half Marathon is also tomorrow, starting at 9.30am from the Headrow and finishing in Millennium Square.
