Baldwin leads Steelers’ fightback to deny Stingrays and take control of Cup group

In the first of two meetings in five days between the Yorkshire rivals, it looked as if something of a shock was on the cards when visitors Hull emerged for the third period 3-2 ahead.

But defenceman Gord Baldwin levelled for the home side and, once Mike Forney had put the Steelers ahead for a third time on the night with a powerplay strike, there was only one winner.

Tyler Mosienko made it a two-goal game before Jason Hewitt’s third goal of the season ended any hopes of a Hull comeback.

Steelers had gone ahead through Mathieu Roy’s short-handed strike.

But Hull ensured they were not to be taken lightly when Eric Galbraith’s fifth of the season at 6.29 drew them level, although the Steelers were ahead again only 23 seconds later through young British forward Luke Ferrara.

Just over three minutes into the second period, Jordan Mayer made it 2-2 and although Matt Larke’s first of the season for Hull in the 40th minute gave the Steelers plenty to think about ahead of their return for the third session, the home side regrouped to hit back in style and move three points clear of their closest Group B rivals.
