The Sheffield Sharks lost their opening game of the BBL season against defending champions Newcastle Eagles 78-85 at the EIS.

The night started with a minute’s applause following the tragic passing of Mike Cook’s father; the player is expected to arrive back in the UK on Tuesday.

The new-look Sharks held their own, even with the changes made in the off-season and their best efforts, it was the visitors that took the spoils.

It was an encouraging performance from the Sharks against an Eagles side who are firm favourites for glory in the BBL once again this season.

At both the end of the first and second quarters, the scores were tied 24-24 and later 40–40.

As the game went on, Newcastle grew into their stride and it was clear to see why they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Captain Mike Tuck picked up the MVP award on the night in what was a great showing from the experienced Canadian who contributed and led by example with 21 points and eight rebounds to his name.

Up next for the Sharks is the visit of the Cheshire Phoenix on Friday October 2 at the EIS.

Leeds Force suffered a 68-82 defeat last night in their BBL opener against Cheshire Phoenix.
