Becchio close to recall after nasty head injury

The Argentinian striker was stretchered from the field early in last weekend's defeat to Norwich City after being accidentally kicked in the face.

Becchio, who swallowed his tongue in the incident, then underwent extensive treatment from the United physio and doctor before being rushed to hospital.

However, after receiving the all-clear from the medics, he re-joined the rest of the Leeds squad for the long coach ride home from Carrow Road and is, according to Grayson, in contention for tomorrow's meeting with Swindon.

The United manager said: "Luciano is coming along nicely. He is in the hands of the medical doctors and we will see if he can be involved.

"He got a nasty whack, swallowed his tongue and was then out for a short while. It was a great part played by our medical staff in clearing his airways.

"Luciano was a bit dizzy afterwards, but he came home with us and we have taken it day by day. We will leave it late but it has to be a medical decision and we will be advised. We will speak to Luciano and to the doctors.

"We are just grateful he is still in one piece."

Such was the ferocity of the kick that floored Becchio, he seemed to be knocked out cold only for Leeds to insist afterwards that was not the case.

If the Argentinian is not available, Grayson must decide whether to stick with Jermaine Beckford and Mike Grella, who replaced Becchio, as his front two for the vital meeting with Swindon.

After a run of three straight defeats, United's advantage over the chasing pack in the race for second place is down to the slimmest of margins.

Just one goal separates Leeds from Millwall, who have a great chance to knock Grayson's men out of the top two for the first time since August when they host Brentford at The Den tonight.

Victory for the Lions would pile the pressure on at Elland Road tomorrow against a Robins side who trail United by one point.

Grayson will, therefore, be relieved to have Gary McSheffrey and Aidan White available with only Patrick Kisnorbo definitely out after rupturing his Achilles in last month's defeat to Millwall.
