Beverley 24 Penrith 26: Late penalty denies Beverley thrilling win

BEVERLEY lost out narrowly to rivals Penrith after a thrilling match at Beaver Park.

Despite the heavy conditions this was an entertaining game with the result in doubt until the very end.

Penrith went ahead after 15 minutes with a penalty from fly-half Steve Wood but Beverley quickly struck back to take the lead with a try in the corner from winger Goran Jelencic.

Beverley found it difficult to contain the big Penrith pack and their powerful drives to the line led to two tries for centre Mike Hawley and a third before half-time for prop Glen Carr.

The home side were hampered by the loss of fly-half Phil Duboulay and struggled to make any impact in the first half.

Had all three conversions not been missed Penrith might have been out of sight at half-time instead of leading only 18-5.

Beverley reduced the arrears early in the second half with a try from centre Jade Gardiner converted by scrum-half Mike Kilgannon, which left them needing only a second converted try to take the lead.

They raised their game in an effort to get back into it, but Penrith stretched away again with a fine try from winger Tom Armstrong.

Play swung from end to end before Beverley captain David Worrall broke from a scrum on the Penrith line to put Jelencic over for his second try.

Beverley again needed only another converted try to take the lead and they got it in the closing stages when Worrall scored and Kilgannon added the conversion.

Now 24-23 ahead, Beverley looked to have the game won but, with almost the next action, they were penalised for going over the top in a ruck and Wood kicked the penalty from 35 metres to claim victory.
