On retirement, he went into management, spending periods at Wycombe Wanderers, Portsmouth and Azerbaijan side Gabala.

While still playing, Adams fought drink and drug addiction and eventually succeeded at rehabiliation.

As a result, he founded the Sporting Chance Clinic, to provide treatment, counselling and support for sports people suffering drink, drug or gambling addiction.

“Football is what I’ve done since I was six,” he says. “I could never cut off my association with the game, which is why I still advise Gabala and also work with young people whose parents have addictions.”
