Blossom springs a surprise at Beverley

RACING: Few on Beverley Westwood anticipated Mey Blossom delivering the goods in Division One of the Annie Oxtoby Memorial Handicap.

Richard Whitaker’s attractive mare was sent on her way at 14-1, but convincingly belied those odds in the hands of 5lb claimer George Chaloner.

Irish Boy proved a worthy foe, but Mey Blossom refused to wilt under considerable pressure and steamed home by a neck.

Whitaker said: “That’s her third win here so it’s definitely a case of ‘horses for courses’. We’ve had a bit of a fun on the all-weather with her this winter, but Spring is definitely her time of the year. I’m sure there’ll be another race here we can have a look at.”

Toto Skyllachy is also something of a Beverley maestro, and secured his fourth course success in the John Jackson Handicap.

The David O’Meara-trained eight-year-old fleetingly appeared trapped for room, but Danny Tudhope skilfully engineered a pocket of daylight and shot clear.
