Bowns gets chance to make step up

SHEFFIELD Steeldogs’ netminder Ben Bowns has signed a two-way deal with Hull Stingrays which should see him get his first taste of top-flight action at some point during the 2011-12 season.

Although he never saw any ice time, the 20-year-old was called up into the Great Britain squad for the recent World Championships in Ukraine where they secured an unexpected silver medal.

Hull have also confirmed they will take part in the P&O Ferries Cup tournament against Dutch teams Ruyters Eaters Geleen and Tilburg Trappers.

The event has had to be switched to the home of Coventry Blaze – who share the same owners – as Hull Arena is unavailable for the weekend of September 3-4, when the tournament will be held.

Sheffield Steelers’ player-coach Ryan Finnerty yesterday announced American John DeCaro was joining the Elite League champions.

The 29-year-old won the Central Hockey League championship least season with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
