Champion Campbell yet to make up mind over next move

The 25-year-old, who became the first Briton to win the bantamweight title in 108 years at London 2012, has steadfastly refused to rush into his next move.

But with interest building all the time, and his own hunger and desire for a new challenge starting to eat away at him, Campbell appears ready to take the next step.

Amir Khan’s UK arm of Golden Boy Promotions have been very vocal in their pursuit of Campbell – and other Olympic medallists including Leeds’s Nicola Adams.

But Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing might be a better fit, given their growing reputation and the fact that Rob McCracken – Campbell’s performance director in the amateur ranks – works as a coach for Matchroom’s Carl Froch.

Turning professional could net Campbell a life-changing sum of money, given he is the most decorated Briton to have emerged from the amateur ranks.

Past Olympians like Audley Harrison, Amir Khan and James Degale made hundreds of thousands of pounds by turning professional after winning medals.

Continuing on to Rio in four years remains an option for Campbell, but even with the 44 per cent increase in funding that British boxing received this week, he would be unlikely to see any of that as an amateur.

Campbell said: “No decision has been made yet, I’m still very much evaluating all my options to see what I am going to do.

“Boxing is a massive passion of mine, I’m still training every day.

“Obviously when you’ve got a family and a mortgage and bills to pay you need the money to be there, but for me it’s all about being the best I can be and being the best in the world.”

Campbell was a European champion and world silver medallist before he added the Olympic title to his cv in August.

He said: “I’ve achieved my dream and it’s something I can be proud of for the rest of my life.

“Now it’s about setting new goals. I’m putting a new dream in place and trying to go for that.

“I just don’t know what it is yet.

“I’ve definitely still got that hunger. I’ve learned from the Olympics, and being out of competitive boxing for the longest period I’ve ever been out of it, I’ve got a burning passion inside me that I want to get out there and entertain people again.

“Decisions will be made within the next month or so. But even now, I still couldn’t say which way I am going.”

Campbell is to continue cashing in on his new-found fame by appearing on Dancing on Ice in the new year.
