Adams will become the first British boxer to successfully defend an Olympic title since Hackney featherweight Harry Mallin did so in 1924 if she rises to the occasion in South America.

But the 33-year-old is intent on pushing the Olympics to the back of her mind for the time being as she focuses on finally claiming the one major title which still eludes her.

Adams has picked up three silver medals at the World Championships between 2008 and 2012 and insists she will head to Kazakhstan in May in search of gold irrespective of what happens in the Olympic qualifier.

Adams said: “I definitely want to go to the worlds regardless of whether I’ve qualified (for Rio). It’s the only major title I’m missing and I want to go down in the Hall of Fame with those athletes who have won everything in their sport.

“There will still be lots of people who need to qualify so it will be a really tough Championships, but I want to continue to make history and I hope I can get that gold medal in the build-up to Rio.”
