Hull Olympian Campbell earns world championship shot

Hull bantamweight Luke Campbell is through to his first World Championship final.

The former European champion edged a countback decision over Ireland’s John Joe Nevin after a 12-12 draw, to make his first world final at the championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Both Campbell and Nevin had already qualified for the Olympics.

Campbell, 24, said: “It was a close one but I thought I did enough. I was counting the score in the last one and I thought I won by a couple. All the graft in the gym and throughout the year is paying off. I’ll be going to my first Olympics and now I’ve got a World Championship final to look forward to. I can’t wait.”

Campbell is one of three boxers from Great Britain’s history-making team in tomorrow’s World Championship finals in Baku after semi-final wins for Andrew Selby and Anthony Joshua.
