London experience should enable Campbell to thrive on home patch

Luke Campbell’s first professional bout will be at an open air venue in Hull in July.

The 25-year-old Olympic bantamweight champion is to fight on either the first or second weekend of July at the KC Stadium or Craven Park.

Eddie Hearn, whose Matchroom stable lured Campbell out of the unpaid ranks, will meet Assem Allam today to discuss the possible use of Hull City’s KC Stadium for the fight.

Campbell is the most successful amateur in the history of British boxing having won a European title and a world silver as well as gold at London 2012. He already enjoys hero status in Hull thanks to his exploits in London last summer, and will fight at super featherweight or lightweight.

“Fighting in Hull at an open air venue would be unreal,” he said.

“I learnt a lot from the Olympic experience. It was the first time going out there where you had so much pressure on your shoulders, boxing for 10,000 people who were there for you and cheering for you.

“I used the fans for my benefit. Every time they cheered that raised my game a little bit.

“To handle that type of pressure, especially in your own country, was tough but I went out there, I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it. Experiences like that will help me in my pro career.

“The next step is to try and achieve my goals in the professional ranks.”

Campbell will share the bill with long-time friend and training partner Tommy Coyle and possibly Sheffield’s unbeaten boxer Kell Brook, one of the stars of the Matchroom stable.

Hearn said: “We have someone in Luke that can penetrate fresh audiences and breathe new life into the sport. Luke is a tremendous young fighter and the perfect role model with a backing in his home city like I have never seen.”
