Gavin comfortably outpointed Jorge Sanchez to win the WBC Silver super-bantamweight title in Manchester.

The fight, an official eliminator for the WBC world title, saw the dangerous Panamanian lose his unbeaten record after 15 wins on home soil.

Victory left Gavin in sight of matching Jamie, the WBA world bantamweight title-holder.

Gavin, with little amateur experience, had his first professional fight in December, 2010, but 16 fights later he is ready to rule the world before the end of the year.

“It was a good performance,” said McDonnell after recording a 119-108, 118-109, 118-110 decision on the cards.

“You could tell he had a bit of a dig. I expected him to tire a little because he had only done the eight rounds before.”

Sanchez, floored by a quick right in the second, did just that. He buckled McDonnell slightly in the third, but paid for his torrid early pace in the middle rounds, McDonnell picking him off at will.

With McDonnell knowing he was well ahead on points, he was able to sit back and allow the Panamanian to flay away with limited success.
